Spousal open work permits in Canada are available to the spouses of individuals working or studying in the country, provided they meet specific criteria.
For Workers
The spouse of a skilled worker who is approved to work in Canada for six months or longer.
Your spouse’s work permit, confirming their authorization to work in Canada, along with a letter from their current employer verifying their employment in a National Occupational Classification (NOC) skill type.
For Students
- have a valid study permit
- are eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) and
- are a full-time student at one of these types of schools:
- a public post-secondary school, such as a college or university, or CEGEP in Quebec
- a private college-level school in Quebec
- a Canadian private school that can legally award degrees under provincial law (for example, Bachelors, master’s or Doctorate degree
